CHESS

CHESS

The Object: To checkmate or “capture” your opponent’s King.

The Setup:

  • One (1) light colored square should always be on your bottom right.
  • Queen is always placed on a square of her own color.
  • The player with the lightest color pieces goes first.

Your players: King, Queen, Bishop, Kinght, Rook and the Pawn

Your King moves only one (1) square at a time in any direction. It can capture others but never be captured. You must never position the King where it can be captured by others. Meaning: never move your king in-to check! The King must always stay at least one (1) square from the opposing King. This is called respect for others. Both Kings must always stay on the chess board at all times.

Your Queen may move forward, backward, sideways or diagonally in a straight line. If a piece is in her way, she may take it. When the Queen takes an opponent’s piece, the player’s turn is over.

Your Bishop may move only diagonally. Never in a straight line. It can go as far as it can. If a piece is in its way, it may take it. When the Bishop takes an opponent’s piece, the player’s turn is over.

The Rook/Castle may only move forward, backward or side-wards, never diagonally. If a piece is in its way, it may take it. When the Rook/Castle takes an opponent’s piece, the player’s turn is over.

The Knight/Horse may travel three squares-two squares in one direction, then one additional square at a 90-degree angle. Or in the shape of an L. The Knight/Horse is a jumper. It can jump over another piece to an unoccupied square, or into a square occupied by the opponent, capturing the piece it lands on. When a knight/horse leaves his square, it must always land on a square of the opposite color. When the Knight/Horse takes an opponent’s piece, the player’s turn is over.

The Pawn is very powerful when used in the correct way. They move forward on square at a time, except on the first move when you can choose to move them two squares forward. You can never move this particular pawn more than one square after that. It can only capture the opponents piece (1) diagonal square at a time. That piece must be to the right or left front of it. The Pawn is suck if there is a piece in front of it. If and when a Pawn moves to the light square in the upper left corner of the game-board on the opposite side, it may substitute any other piece in the game except for a King.

YOUR FIRST MOVE

On any first move, you may only move a Pawn one or two spaces forward, or jumping a Knight/Horse over your Pawn.

CASTLING

On your turn you may move your King two squares left or right towards the Rook/Castle, then place the Rook/Castle on the square over which the King crossed. Before that can take place a few conditions must be met: Must be King’s first move. Must be Rooks/Castle first move. There can’t be any pieces between the King and the Rook/Castle. Finally, the King must be in check or pass through a check.

CHECK

The King is the only piece that can and will be in check. This is accomplished when it is under threat of being captured on an opponent’s next turn. There are only four(4) ways a King can get out of check. (1.) To move the King into a free square. (2.) Block the check with another piece. (3.) Capture the piece that has checked the King. (4.) Gracefully resign from the game, shake your opposition’s hand, say “GOOD GAME” and walk away.

CHECKMATE

When none of the above four(4) moves can be made, the check becomes CHECKMATE. and the player who put the other in check/checkmate is the winner.
