Efficiency

The Department of Government Efficiency https://www.doge.gov/ has terminated 94 wasteful contracts worth $8.5 billion saving $546 million of taxpayer’s money, including a $533k Commerce deal for “editing support” and a $61M HHS contract for “healthcare innovation solutions.” This means more money into the USA tax players pockets.

TUNNELS

Have you ever sat in traffic? A good person turns into a monster when you are stuck in traffic and can not move because of an issue you can not see unless you have a drone in your vehicle and can take it out to view the miles of traffic in front of you? Well, to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic, roads must go 3D, which means either flying cars or tunnels are needed. Unlike flying cars, tunnels are weatherproof, out of sight, and won’t fall on your head. Tunnels minimize usage of valuable surface land and do not conflict with existing transportation systems. A large network of tunnels can alleviate congestion in any city; no matter how large a city grows, more levels of tunnels can be added.

TUNNEL VISION

~The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is the longest road tunnel in the United States, measuring 2.5 miles as it bores through Maynard Mountain in the Chugach National Forest. Opened to vehicles in 2000 after conversion from a rail-only tunnel built in 1945, it uniquely serves as both a single-lane highway and rail line—alternating traffic direction hourly to accommodate cars, trucks, and trains connecting the town of Whittier to the Alaska mainland near Portage, about 60 miles southeast of Anchorage. This makes it a vital link for access to Prince William Sound and a key route for travelers in remote south-central Alaska.

~The Gotthard Base Tunnel, Switzerland is the world’s longest and deepest railway tunnel, stretching 35.4 miles through the Swiss Alps. Opened in 2016, it connects Erstfeld and Bodio in central Switzerland, revolutionizing high-speed rail travel across Europe by reducing journey times significantly. Unlike underwater tunnels like the Channel Tunnel, it’s entirely underground, bored through solid rock at depths up to 1.55 miles.

~Lærdal Tunnel, NorwayThe Lærdal Tunnel is the world’s longest road tunnel, measuring 24.51 km (15.23 miles). It’s located in Vestland county, connecting the municipalities of Lærdal and Aurland along the European route E16 highway between Oslo and Bergen.

~Delaware Aqueduct, New YorkThe Delaware Aqueduct is the longest underground tunnel in the United States, spanning 85 miles under the Hudson River and through the Catskill Mountains. Completed in 1944, it carries about half of New York City’s drinking water from reservoirs in the Delaware River Basin to the city, making it a critical piece of the city’s water supply infrastructure. Unlike road or rail tunnels, it’s designed exclusively for water transport and remains operational today.

America has a tunnel making machine. Meet Prufrock

Prufrock is designed to construct mega-infrastructure projects in a matter of weeks instead of years. Prufrock is designed to tunnel at a speed of 1 mile per week, which is 6 times faster than The Boring Company’s previous generation TBM (Godot-Plus). This is still 4-5 times slower than a garden snail…but Prufrock is catching up!

Prufrock is targeting a speed greater than 1 mile per week, which is 6 times faster than The Boring Company’s previous-generation TBM (Godot). This is still 4-5 times slower than a garden snail… but Prufrock is catching up! Besides increasing speed, TBC is targeting an all-in cost of a Loop Transportation tunnel of less than $8M/mile.

Porpoising: To start the tunnel, Prufrock arrives on a truck, tilts down, and launches into the ground within 24 hours. To finish the tunnel, Prufrock emerges from the ground and mines onto a trailer (called “The Monster”), which then drives to its next launch site. This eliminates the need to excavate expensive pits or use enormous cranes.

Continuous Mining: All soft-soil TBMs mine ~5 feet, stop, erect the precast concrete tunnel liner, and then start over. Prufrock is designed to install the tunnel liner simultaneously with mining, eliminating the need to stop the TBM every 5 feet.

Zero-People-In-Tunnel (ZPIT): Prufrock is designed to have zero people in the tunnel during normal operations. This is the safest, fastest, and least expensive method of tunneling. The ZPIT operation is controlled from the Operations Control Center, which supports the expanding fleet of Prufrock tunnel boring machines.

Vertical Integration: TBC designs and manufactures the TBMs and tunnel liners, designs the Loop transportation system, builds out Loop, and operates Loop. This promotes rapid iteration and large cost reductions.

Tunnel/TBM Size and Design Standardization: TBC maintains the same tunnel design for all projects to avoid “reinventing the wheel” for every tunnel. In order to accommodate different geologies with a standard design, TBC maintains conservatively large structural factors of safety.

Earthquakes!

When designed properly, tunnels are some of the safest places to be during an earthquake. From a structural safety standpoint, the tunnel moves uniformly with the ground, in contrast to how surface structures react to earthquakes. Additionally, a large amount of earthquake damage is caused by falling debris, which does not happen inside of tunnels.

Some examples:

1994 Northridge Earthquake: No damage to LA subway tunnels.

1989 Loma Prieta (Northern California) Earthquake: No damage to tunnels, which were used to transport rescue personnel.

1985 Mexico City Earthquake: No damage to tunnels, which were used to transport rescue personnel.
