South Padre Island Farmers Market — 8605 Padre Blvd. Every Sunday from 11am-1pm.
At the end of the day, when you listen closely, the magic of a farmers market lives in the stories that leave with its people. A neighbor lending a hand in a season of shortage. A customer who becomes a friend after years of Sunday morning conversations. Two women who’ve shown up for each other week after week, learning together and pushing each other forward.
Communities grow by:
- Growing the America’s Farmers Market Celebration™ (now in its 17th year), the largest annual promotion of farmers markets in the country, while directing funding to help markets strengthen the farmer-to-consumer connection.
- Expanding adoption of the US Farmed™ Seal, AFT’s certification that helps consumers choose products made with 95% or more U.S.-grown ingredients.
- Strengthening farm-to-institution programs, state-grown branding, and processing capacity so farmers can reach new markets and communities can access more local food.
About American Farmland Trust
American Farmland Trust is the only national organization that takes a holistic approach to agriculture, focusing on the land itself, the agricultural practices used on that land, and the farmers and ranchers who do the work. AFT launched the conservation agriculture movement and continues to raise public awareness through its No Farms No Food® message.
Since its founding in 1980, AFT has helped permanently protect nearly 8 million acres of agricultural land, advanced environmentally sound farming practices on millions of additional acres and supported thousands of farm families.
There are many organizations older than the American Farmland Trust (AFT), which was founded in 1980 as the first national nonprofit dedicated exclusively to farmland preservation in the US.
Here are some notable examples of older conservation and land trust organizations that have worked on land protection, including farmland:
- 1891
The oldest land trust in the US, based in Massachusetts; it protects a wide range of lands, including agricultural areas.
The Nature Conservancy - 1951
A major national conservation group that preserves various habitats, including farmland, through easements and acquisitions.
ACRES Land Trust - 1960
Indiana’s oldest local land trust, focused on protecting natural areas and farmland.
Hanover Conservancy - 1961
New Hampshire’s oldest local land trust, conserving community lands including farms and forests.
Madison Land Conservation Trust - 1964
One of Connecticut’s oldest land trusts, dedicated to preserving open spaces like farmland.
These groups predate AFT and often include farmland in their broader conservation efforts, though AFT pioneered a national focus solely on agricultural land.
Megan Westgate, founder of the Non-GMO Project, introduces a new standard, NonUPF Verified, that will help consumers understand and make choices about ultra-processed foods.
Drawing on the success of the Non-GMO Project in driving widespread market changes, Westgate emphasizes the power consumers have to influence the food system through their purchasing decisions. Listen in to find out when you might see the new Non-UPF Verified labels on packages and some of the brands who are early adopters of the movement. Listen below.
